Nowadays, it seems that many media outlets only partially fulfill their true task: they report on events, yet uncovering abuses in (global) politics often falls into the background. Investigative journalism that questions power structures, exposes corruption, and demands transparent decision-making is increasingly marginalized or even publicly denigrated, labeled as part of the “right-wing scene” and put under pressure. Instead of in-depth research, quick news, shortened formats, and partisan perspectives dominate the discourse, leaving relevant topics superficial and making complex interconnections hard to understand. In this situation of “servicing the status quo,” courageous, independently financed media, robust investigative teams, and a media scene that places public interests above mainstream media financing and click counts are needed again — so that politics can be more transparent, responsible, and democratic. The candlelight stands for this hope for change — a shimmering rebellion. It flickers despite the darkness, showing the way in these currently unstable times and reminding us that light, even in small moments, can offer warmth, orientation, and hope. It only takes a single flame! It can inspire trust and direct the gaze toward a better future…

Kant’s writing is broadly known. But most people have only read the title. Otherwise they would have read how far we have always been, not just in these weeks, from fulfillment, and how little we have contributed and continue to contribute. And how much effort is instead expended to create the illusion that we would do everything for peace. Kant’s “Perpetual Peace” formulates a contract for real, lasting peace: not a truce, but a permanent peace; no heredity or inheritance rights of states; abolition of standing armies; no interference in other governments or borrowing to fund war; ban on dishonorable methods of war so that they do not reappear in peace. The sacred right of humanity remains more important than any ruling power — despite all the illusions behind the scenes.

Chess for liberty

"In politics it’s like chess: sometimes you have to sacrifice a pawn to win the game." ( Helmut Schmidt ) The truth about the social situation in many countries in Europe and around the world lies on the board: We citizens are increasingly being relegated to the “pawn,” a figure whose personal influence or status is to be diminished or is already often neglected. Because if a citizen does not play along in the game of kings, the fate of the individual “pawn” becomes meaningless when the overall victory in the game is to be secured. For the pawn, the call is now to wake up and become aware of his position as the smallest and most important chess piece. For he is the only piece that can transform into another piece when he reaches the opponent’s back rank. Only he has the chance for a “peasant-bourgeois” revolution to save a free society and the pillars of (freedom of) opinion, individuality, self-determination, religion and culture.

Democracy crowns itself king

Democracy crowns itself the king. - Yes, it could all be so simple! One commands, the others obey – and everything will be fine. The idea of salvation through submission has repeatedly attracted clever and less clever minds. Especially in our times, at many state levels in Europe, one observes the rise of a political culture practiced by the absolutist rulers of the 16th and 17th centuries, because it supposedly promises security, efficiency, and strength like no other form of government. Almost daily we witness a new greed for unleashed, unrestrained rule with no check any longer. The gravest difference: not dressed in the fine finery of royal attire, but in the secular suit of democracy with the label "We are the guarantors of people's freedom!" From its thinking and actions, the question arises: "Do we now have to protect democracy from the 'defenders of democracy'?"

Lateral thinking

Freedom of expression, as it seems today, is increasingly becoming the freedom of like-minded people in many parts of the world. Tolerance is preached, openness is shown, but everything that doesn’t fit one’s worldview is sanctioned. And those who argue against it are labeled “quirky thinkers.” Only a few years ago, the term simply stood for someone who thinks unconventionally or, in the philosophical sense, a free spirit. Especially a free and liberal society is based on fundamental rights, regulated procedures, and legal protection. Fundamental rights like freedom of expression are defensive rights against intrusive, powerful, and totalitarian states, systems with so-called “ministries of truth.” In today’s turbulent times, it is important to take responsibility and to think for oneself about the pressing questions and the important things in life!

A soldier in uniform. Traumatized. At some point he will speak about when and how he first lost his life. He will show his wounds to his wife, the physical ones and the psychological ones, the scarred ones and the ones that will never heal. It is the war that dealt these wounds. One of many across the ages. Currently, people fight against people in many places around the world. Destroyed homes, torn bodies, flight and displacement, and—tears… Why do wars keep happening, why can we not manage to live in peace? Is peace perhaps just an illusion? Just as wars arise from the minds of people, so too does peace arise in our thinking. Each of us is responsible for it ourselves! And assuming we have free will, of course we can decide for war or for peace. Imagine the following scenario: It is war and no one goes to fight! There is always a hope for peace. Just as a dove emerges from the soldier’s body…

Empathy, emotional intelligence, creativity, acting on intuition... What else remains for us humans when we are deprived of sovereignty over these abilities? In the past, we humans gave the orders; today AI is at the helm. For many, it is seen as a savior on topics that seemingly overwhelm us. At dizzying speed, it solves questions and problems that seem unsolvable to us. And it supposedly knows all the buttons to press so that WE function optimally. Is that what we want? The future human – a calculable, controlled, and icy being without a human spirit, somewhere frozen between circuits, algorithms, and program codes? Steered by machines that calculate probabilities, recognize and copy patterns, read tonalities and emotionalities, and seemingly tailor themselves to us? At the same time, with all this technology, there is growing concern about how it might be abused and which political systems could best exploit it to expand and consolidate power. Have the courage to use your own intellect – as humans we have intuition and experience, as well as rights and morality, and we can relate to our counterpart, to God, and to the entire earthly world with all its beings and… love.

Populist, status-quo-obsessed politicians who hang their banner to the wind, ideologue-driven misjudgments, corruption, etc. And media that play along without critique. The result: conformity, mainstream thinking, and politically instrumentalized, uniformly ticking people who hang like puppets on the strings of this state power in a country without national identity. Deprived of their own reason. And those who resist are brutally coerced to surrender their brains. What a surreal, distant scenario! Or is it closer than we think? Do we really want to live in such a world? Do we find fulfillment in it? The image is meant to be a warning to all people of good will and clear understanding, an encouragement to think for oneself, because knowledge is power: “Sapere aude! Dare to know! Have the courage to use your own understanding!”

Europe and the world are currently facing challenges that shake the very foundations of democratic thought: terror, violence, the refugee crisis, the power behavior of statesmen - in our post-factual age, rough feelings, aggression and conspiracy theories dominate. In the worst case, the collapse of Europe, including our humanistic value system, could threaten. "The Decay of Europe" wants to bring this scenario closer to the recipient and encourage him to think.

The girl's look, sad, hopeless, alone - an expression of her loss. Wars leave deep scars in the lives of children: families torn apart, thousands of schools and kindergartens destroyed - and the constant fear of new bombings. The painting "Homs" is a symbol for all children and young people who are robbed of their childhood and youth by wars, whether in Syria or currently in the Ukraine. Children represent the future of their country. If you want to prevent a lost generation, you have to give them hope for a future. What it looks like depends on OUR actions. WE have to set the right course for this!

Bellum aureum

Year of origin: 2018

Type: Unique

Technique: Helmet with coffee beans, Acrylic gold

<Price on request>

Hot, aromatic, with milk and sugar or simply black - a cup of coffee is simply a part of life for many people. What many people are not aware of: It is a long way from harvesting the ripe coffee cherries in countries of the Global South to the finished roasted coffee beans, but above all there is an enormous increase in value. The companies and coffee roasters in the northern hemisphere primarily benefit from this - but not the pickers in the plantations of the growing regions such as Guatemala, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, etc. The beans used come from different countries of origin. The color gold symbolizes the money earned in this "Bellum Aureum".
